Columbus Mayor Coleman and Delaware County Commissioner Gary Merrel are pleased to announce plans to break ground on Ohio’s second Ikea location near Polaris Fashion Center.

The announcement that one of the country’s largest and most popular home furnishings retail stores, Ikea, would be moving into the former home of Polaris Area’s Germain Amphitheater was made Tuesday, January 27th, as Columbus Mayor Michael B Coleman Coleman and and Delaware County Board of Commissioners President Gary Merrell sat across from each other in modern style lounge chairs that were setup in a model living room Ikea had constructed for display at Tuesday morning’s press conference.

Ikea has goals to break ground on the 33 acre work site they are preparing in the Spring of 2016, and looks forward to sparking the creation of nearly 1,000 new Central Ohio jobs; more than 500 jobs during construction and the store will employ 300.

“Ikea is the right stuff, in the right place, at the right time for the city of Columbus,” stated Colemen. “I hear a lot of wishes from constituents, and the No. 1 retail wish is, ‘When are you going to get an Ikea in Columbus?’ Well, it’s finally here.”

Merrell, in addition to recognizing the scale of this project and complimenting Delaware’s “great” county engineer, told those at the press conference, “We have a new destination retailer. It’s one more special experience that benefits all of us.”
